Answers to common questions
-
How are Anchor's classes run? What does a class coach do?
Classes at Anchor generally meet 3 days per week—typically Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays for 1.5 hours per class.
Athletes follow programming written by their coach (you!), and you’re there to give them feedback and encouragement on their lifts.
This is nothing like personal training—you are coaching athletes in powerlifting, and your athlete’s goals may or may not include stepping onto the platform to compete. Everyone here is trying to get stronger, and to see what their bodies can do.
-
What times would I coach? What are the athletes like?
We are generally recruiting coaches for all time slots, but have the most need for the two following classes:
M/W/F 6—7:30PM Mixed Gender class
M/W/F 7:30—9PM Men’s only class
Coaching one class will take only about 5 hours per week of your time.
Our athletes come from all backgrounds in life and lifting experience, and we are an LGBTQ+ safe space and ally in all the ways. Anchor is a very inclusive and diverse gym.

What do I need to be qualified to coach with Anchor?
First and foremost, you need to practice the sport of powerlifting to coach with Anchor. That means that you strive to improve your squat, bench press, deadlift, and total, and follow programming to do so. If you have competed before, that’s great—we coach to competition standards.
Previous coaching experience is very helpful, but is not necessarily required. We train new coaches all the time, so let’s talk.
Formal certifications are welcome but not required—your actual experience over time is far more important than whether you can pass an exam.
You will be required to carry individual liability insurance to coach at Anchor. We can help you obtain this through an outside provider.
